New Jersey today became the ninth state to call for a Constitutional amendment to overturn the disastrous Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. FEC. Its resolution, AR 86, was passed in the Assembly in a bipartisan vote of 50 to 22.

John Bonifaz, executive director of Free Speech For People, made the following statement:

“New Jersey’s resolution not only demonstrates momentum for this movement to reclaim our democracy, but as the ninth state to take this stand, puts even more pressure on Congress to pass an amendment. State after state is stepping up to push back against big money in politics and the flawed doctrine of corporate personhood, and after New Jersey’s action today, we expect more will follow.”

The effort in New Jersey was led by the NJ Coalition for the Overturn of Citizens United.

Nine states have now called on Congress to send them a constitutional amendment for ratification: New Jersey, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Vermont. Colorado and Montana will hold statewide votes on the question on November 6th.

Launched on the day of the Citizens United ruling, Free Speech For People is a national non-partisan campaign challenging the fabrication of corporate rights under the US Constitution and seeking to ensure that people, not corporations, govern in America.
