We have some pretty exciting news to tell you about. We recently learned that an anonymous foundation donor has awarded Free Speech For People a $500,000 matching grant to help build our new Legal Advocacy Program. This means that any donations we receive in support of this new initiative will be matched dollar for dollar by this donor. Click here to donate and learn more.

Not only are we in the process of gaining support for this matching grant, but we are also taking part in two other exciting giving initiatives: #GivingTuesday and the CREDO Mobile Donations Program. In the past we’ve raised over $50,000 with CREDO and to help us all you have to do is sign up and vote!

For our part this year’s #GivingTuesday we have a lot of exciting ways you can get involved on December 3rd. Stay tuned for details.

Why does donating to Free Speech For People matter?

Here’s a list of just some of the highlights of our victories in 2013 that your donation would help to continue.

We are now one-third of the way there in support of a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and reclaim our democracy (one-third of the states needed to ratify and one-third of the numbers of US Senators and US Representatives needed to pass an amendment bill). Sixteen states are now on record calling for an amendment, along with more than 125 Members of Congress;

Maine became the 13th state to call for an amendment following the passage of a state resolution in the Maine legislature with strong bipartisan support. We partnered with Maine Citizens for Clean Elections in leading this successful campaign;

• The White House re-affirmed President Barack Obama’s support for an amendment following a petition we initiated on the White House website;

• In our continued work to build a transpartisan movement, we developed and released an extensive first-ever report documenting more than 100 Republican officials across the country who oppose Citizens United and who have called for a constitutional amendment;

US Senator Jon Tester of Montana introduced our People’s Rights Amendment in the U.S Senate to reverse the Citizens United ruling and to make it clear that corporations do not have constitutional rights, as if they were people. This marked the first introduction in the US Senate of a constitutional amendment bill to overturn fully the fabricated doctrine of corporate constitutional rights and ensure that people, not corporations, shall govern in America;

US Senator Tom Udall of New Mexico re-introduced his constitutional amendment bill to overturn the Supreme Court’s 1976 ruling in Buckley v. Valeo and to restore the authority of Congress and the States to establish campaign spending limits. Senator Udall’s amendment bill includes new language we recommended regarding the fundamental promise of political equality for all;

• We launched our new Legal Advocacy Program, which will lead a parallel movement in the courts to challenge the Citizens United and Buckley v. Valeo rulings and the legal doctrines underlying those rulings. This new program will be backed by an outstanding Legal Advisory Committee of respected law professors, former judges, and attorneys from across the country, including James Exum, Jr., former Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, and James Nelson, former Justice of the Montana Supreme Court.

Every amount counts, and remember, donating directly to the matching grant means what you give is actually doubled. Click here to donate today or click here to donate to our matching grant.
