Posted on September 30, 2021 Defending Key Reforms Share: FSFP President John Bonifaz recently participated in a virtual discussion with the BOLD ReThink, a public advocacy project focused on democracy reform, about innovative legal strategies for getting money out of politics and preserving a democracy of, by, and for the people. “The right to vote is a right to participate in the political process on an equal and meaningful basis and what we have today is a campaign finance system that undermines and violates the right to vote by excluding voters from a critical part of the machinery for getting elected,” said Bonifaz. During the course of the discussion, Bonifaz discussed: The Wealth Primary argument, which details how our current campaign finance system violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. A series of constitutional amendments to overturn Citizens United and prior rulings that allow corporations to be treated as people and money to be treated as speech. The ongoing fight to challenge foreign-influenced corporate spending in our elections. Watch the full discussion here.
