Posted on January 14, 2025 (January 14, 2025) Democracy Amendments Share: WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 14, 2025) – With 5 days left for President Biden to act, the Biden Publish the ERA Alliance delivered over 200,000 petitions to the White House urging President Biden to instruct the Archivist to publish the Equal Rights Amendment before the end of his administration. The Equal Rights Amendment was approved by two-thirds of Congress and ratified by three-fourths of the states, yet remains unpublished. It’s the only amendment that has met the qualifications of Article V of the Constitution that has not been added to the Constitution. The Biden Publish the ERA Alliance consists of over 60 non-profit, non-partisan advocacy organizations representing millions of members. This is what some members of the coalition are saying: “Today we are delivering to President Biden a message from over 200,000 Americans for him to do his job and publish the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). This is one of the most important actions President Biden can take in his remaining days in office and will forever shape his legacy as the president that delivered the 28th Amendment that protects all Americans from sex-based discrimination.” – Alexandra Flores-Quilty, Campaign Director, Free Speech For People “In addition to lending their signatures, hundreds have come to Washington DC since November 14 to demand constitutional gender equality. There are fewer than five business days left for the Biden Administration to publish the ERA in the Federal Register. Deeds, not words, are what we require from a party that says they support constitutional gender equality.” — Kati Hornung, Executive Director, VoteEquality “While significant, today’s signatures represent but a tiny fraction of the calls, letters, postcards, emails and texts urging President Biden to publish the Equal Rights Amendment,” said Nicole Vorrasi Bates, Founder and Executive Director of Shattering Glass. “How can the President ignore his duty, as well as the calls for ERA publication from millions of Americans, 46 US Senators, 122 US Representatives, labor unions, 100s of organizations, medical, legal and other associations, and so many more? All we are asking for is a chance.” “The Equal Rights Amendment is a pivotal building block to building a gender-equitable future. The ERA’s impact will be profound and touch all Americans, bringing a new set of tools to support those facing discrimination on the basis of sex to our judicial system and to legislators. We simply cannot miss this opportunity to expand the Constitution and finally extend its full protections to the women of this country.” — Kate Kelly, Esq. Senior Director of the Women’s Initiative at the Center for American Progress “We demand immediate action to enshrine gender equality as an undeniable right in the US Constitution. Publishing the ERA will reaffirm our commitment to justice and fairness once and for all. President Biden, this is your chance to stand on the right side of history. Act boldly, act decisively—publish the ERA now.” — Celina Stewart, Esq., CEO, League of Women Voters of the United States. “Young people demand President Biden publish the Equal Rights Amendment. It is our rights, bodies, and futures on the line. The lives of abortion-seekers, Black and brown youth, and poor and working-class folks are on the line. That’s why we’ve shut down streets, walked out of school and work, occupied congressional offices, and are now picketing every day outside of the White House, in below freezing temperatures, to demand our inclusion in the U.S. Constitution. President Biden promised he would fight for reproductive freedom, racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and our futures. Now is the time to fight. We demand ERA now,” Jennifer Vo, Organizing Director of the Young Feminist Party. “We urge President Biden to publish the ERA without delay. At a time when lawmakers and courts are rolling back the rights of women and LGBTQIA+ persons, it is imperative that we have equal rights for all people enshrined in the Twenty-eighth Amendment of the US Constitution.” Ann Toback, CEO, The Workers Circle. “President Biden has a historic opportunity to show true leadership. Publishing the Equal Rights Amendment is not just a legal obligation; it’s a moral imperative. Equality for women cannot remain a dream—it must be a reality. The time to act is now.” – Sheila Katz, CEO, National Council of Jewish Women. “It is beyond unacceptable that we have not guaranteed basic equalities for women in our constitution for the more than 100 years since the Equal Rights Amendment was introduced,” said Tamika Middleton, Managing Director of Women’s March. “With four more years ahead of unimaginable attacks on the rights and freedoms of women, girls and the LGBTQIA+ community, there is no more urgent time than now for President Biden to step up and publish the ERA before he leaves office.” “President Biden has a duty to defend and deepen the freedoms of women, girls, and LGBTQ Americans before MAGA takes power. From taking away our freedoms to decide if and when we have children, to attacking Black businesses, doctors, and families, to allowing billionaires to decide our futures for us, the incoming MAGA regime’s agenda is to lock in supremacist rule for another generation. Today’s petition delivery shows that Americans across races, backgrounds, and genders want Biden to publish the ERA into our Constitution so we, the people, have a critical tool in the years to come to fight for real equality and get free,” — Nicole Carty, Executive Director of Get Free. “Publishing the ERA is not only a matter of principle but a critical step toward equity for Black women, who stand at the intersection of racial and gender oppression. Sisters Lead Sisters Vote is proud to stand with a historic number of organizations and the millions of Americans who support the ERA through the ratification process. There is one step left and President Biden; we urge you to act now and secure a brighter, more equitable future for all.” – Holli Holliday, President, Sisters Lead Sisters Vote “EQUAL MEANS EQUAL is disgusted by the inaction of the Federal government to publish ERA in full violation of the human and civil rights of 51% of the United States population, as well as their overt, illegal disregard of the clear language of Article V of the Constitution. The country, the states, and the women have spoken, demanding equality under law, but to date the administration continues to deliberately ignore the voice of the People; both a criminal act and a national disgrace.” — Kamala Lopez, President/Founder, EQUAL MEANS EQUAL “Catholics Vote Common Good which works to improve the quality of life for all Americans by calling on us all to live the beatitudes. We love our neighbors and believe everyone should have rights. That is why we are calling on our second Catholic President in history to publish the ERA.” — Denise Murphy McGraw, National Co-Chair Catholics Vote Common Good “The Equal Rights Amendment has been ratified, the next step is clear: it must be published without any more delays or excuses. President Biden can ensure his legacy as a champion for gender equality and women’s rights by directing the National Archivist to act, securing constitutional gender equality ahead of the new administration.” — Zakiya Thomas, President & CEO, ERA Coalition. Organizations that have worked to collect signatures for the petition include: American Medical Women’s Association, Catholics Vote Common Good, Center For Common Ground, Civic Shout, Demand Progress, Democracy For America Advocacy Fund, Equal Means Equal, ERA Coalition, Feminist Front, Free Speech For People, Get Free, Hip Hop Caucus, League of Women Voters, Moms First, MoveOn, National Council of Jewish Women, National Organization For Women, Other 98, People Power United, Progress America, Reaching Care, Shattering Glass, Sisters Lead Sisters Vote, Social Security Works, Solidarity Action, TakeItBack.org, The Juggernaut Project, The Workers Circle, Trans Empowerment Project, UltraViolet Action, Vote Equality, and Young Feminist Party.
