WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 24, 2025) – Rep. Al Green (TX-09) introduced a new article of impeachment against President Trump today for Trump’s direct violation of the War Powers Clause of the US Constitution in his military attack on Iran without congressional authorization.

Trump’s unilateral decision to strike without congressional authority or any imminent threat from Iran jeopardizes American lives and interests. This unprovoked use of force has and will continue to escalate conflicts in the already volatile Middle East region, and will put a direct target on American civilians, military personnel, equipment, and bases in the region.

“In starting his illegal and unconstitutional war with Iran without the constitutionally mandated consent of Congress or appropriate notice to Congress, President Trump acted in direct violation of the War Powers Clause of the Constitution,” the article of impeachment states. “President Trump has devolved and continues to devolve American democracy into authoritarianism by disregarding the separation of powers and now usurping congressional war powers.”

Free Speech For People’s team of constitutional lawyers worked closely with Rep. Green in crafting the new article. Free Speech For People has been tracking and compiling Trump’s multiple abuses of power and violations of the Constitution through their Impeach Trump Again campaign. This campaign has generated a wave of public support, with well over 700,000 Americans signing the petition and demanding that Congress impeach Trump.

“Donald Trump is not a king. He does not have the power to take the nation into war.  The Framers were clear that only Congress would have the power to start a war against another country,” said John Bonifaz, President of Free Speech For People. “In launching our nation into an illegal and unconstitutional war against Iran, in direct violation of the War Powers Clause of the Constitution, Trump has committed a grave abuse of power for which he must be immediately impeached and removed from public office. We commend Congressman Al Green for his leadership in introducing his new article of impeachment against this lawless president, and we urge all Members of Congress to abide by their oath to protect and defend the Constitution by supporting this article.”

“President Trump has once again jeopardized American citizens and interests for his own personal whims,” said Suparna Reddy, Senior Counsel at Free Speech For People. “His unprovoked attack on Iran is not only reckless but unconstitutional, usurping Congress’s power to declare war. Congress must act to hold him accountable for his abuses of power.”
