The Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision — which struck down federal limits on political spending by corporations — is already one of the most significant factors in the 2012 elections.

Here at Law Blog, we’ve covered resolutions by cities and states calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn the decision, the Montana Supreme Court’s defiant ruling in favor of its state law on corporate spending limits, contributions by billionaires to Super PACs, and proposed amendments that have been introduced in Congress.

Now the President of the United States is getting involved. In a message (h/t Josh Gerstein) to supporters yesterday titled “We Will Not Play by Two Sets of Rules,” Jim Messina, President Obama’s campaign manager, said that while the president opposes the Citizens United decision and its implications for elections, he can’t ignore “the reality of the law as it currently stands,” and therefore will support a Super PAC called Priorities USA to counter Republican Super PACs.
