Posted on April 19, 2012 (June 16, 2020) Democracy Amendments Share: Vermont today became the third U.S. state to pass a resolution calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling. Both houses of Vermont’s state legislature have now passed a resolution calling for a constitutional amendment “that provides that money is not speech and corporations are not persons”. The resolution is visible here.) Vermont’s action today follows New Mexico, which passed a similar resolution in January and February, and Hawaii, which did so two years ago. Other, similar efforts are underway in many states around the country. We thank and congratulate our friends at Public Citizen and MoveToAmend, who led the way to this important victory in Vermont, and of course the many Free Speech For People members in Vermont who helped push it through.
