It’s been four years this month since the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision that equated corporations with people and allowed unlimited corporate spending in our elections. Since the ruling, corporations and big money interests have flooded our elections, at the local, state, and national levels, with an unprecedented amount of campaign expenditures.

Now corporations are back before the Supreme Court seeking to extend even further their claims of constitutional rights to include a right to the free exercise of religion (as if they were people). Not to mention, the Supreme Court will soon issue a ruling in McCutcheon v. FEC, which has the potential to wipe away longstanding contribution limits and to expand even more the power of the wealthy few over our politics.

If we don’t take action now, it’s only going to get worse. That’s why we’re teaming up with our friends at Represent.Us in support of the American Anti-Corruption Act, along with our Amendment campaign to overturn Citizens United and restore our democracy. The American Anti-Corruption Act would transform how elections are financed, how lobbyists influence politics, and how political money is disclosed.

Taken together, the Act and our Amendment campaign are critical for reclaiming our democracy.

It’s going to take people and groups from all sides working together to defend that basic promise of American democracy: government of, by, and for the people.
