All of us at Free Speech For People are heartbroken by the news that Steve Cobble, our friend and colleague, has died.  Steve left us too soon and suddenly last Friday, a tragic loss for the movement for justice, equality, democracy, and peace around the world.  As Rev. Jesse Jackson said: “We lost a giant.”

We were honored to have worked for many years with Steve, who served as our Senior Political Advisor.  Steve was a brilliant political strategist, a visionary, and a principled human being who dared to dream.  He devoted his life to the struggle for a democracy that works for all of us.  Yet, Steve was also incredibly humble, never one to focus on all of his amazing accomplishments over the decades – always one to lift up the voices of others.  Steve had courage and he had heart.  He also had a wonderful sense of humor.  At his core, Steve believed in the possibility of building a better world, and he never gave up.  As John Nichols of The Nation highlighted in this beautiful tribute published yesterday, Steve kept on fighting.  His legacy will inspire us to keep on fighting too.

We send our deepest sympathies to his family and to all of those whose lives he touched.  May his spirit live on in all of us.  We love you, Steve, and we will deeply miss you.
