Free Speech For People condemns the search of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s home on October 12, 2026 by federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security. This targeted investigation is a politically- and racially-motivated attempt to silence Representative Omar, who has been a frequent critic of the Trump administration’s abuses of power. Congress cannot stand idly by as Trump continues to weaponize federal agencies to carry out his racist, personal, and partisan agendas. It has a duty to impeach and remove Trump for this and hundreds of other impeachable offenses.

Representative Omar, who was granted asylum in the United States as a child and has been a naturalized citizen since she was 17 years old, has faithfully served the people of Minnesota’s 5th congressional district since 2019. Throughout both of Trump’s administrations, Trump and his senior officials have continuously criticized Representative Omar on the basis of her national origin, race and faith, with Trump telling her to “go back” to where she came from in 2019.

Now, less than one month before the midterms, Trump is again attacking Representative Omar, who is running for reelection. Senior Trump officials have baselessly claimed that they have evidence Omar committed immigration fraud and suggested she could be “denaturalized” and deported. The day before the raid Trump repeatedly attacked Omar in a public speech.

The investigation is a dangerous culmination of two ways in which Trump is abusing the power of his office to erode our democracy. First, he has repeatedly targeted Somali-Americans in speech, and he has subjected them to violent abuse by federal agents, culminating in the illegal occupation of Minnesota, the killings of two protestors, and the assaults of countless others.

Second, Trump has undermined once-legitimate federal law enforcement and justice agencies by turning them into highly partisan outfits designed to serve his personal agendas and vendettas. He is destroying the independence of the DOJ and encouraging and ordering federal officials to investigate and prosecute his political opponents. Moreover, the raid of Representative Omar’s home violates a longstanding policy by the DOJ not to take overt investigative steps against members of Congress 60 days prior to elections—a norm established to prevent exactly what has happened here: a baseless and partisan investigation carried out by an agency that no longer serves the interests of justice, but instead the partisan whims of a tyrant.

Congress has the duty and power under the Constitution to stop these and other abuses. It must act now to impeach and remove Donald Trump from public office.
