Free Speech For People Counsel Amira Mattar recently appeared on YES Presents: Rising Up With Sonali to discuss the Trump Is Disqualified Campaign and the ongoing effort to ensure chief election officials bar Trump from the ballot under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment based on his involvement in the Jan 6 insurrection.

Mattar discussed various efforts to bar Trump from the ballot in Minnesota, Colorado, and other states across the country. The following are excerpts from the discussion:

Trump was deeply involved in every stage leading up to and during the insurrection. So we have historic precedent and also recent precedent to determine what insurrection means and how Trump actually engaged in it.

So in the same way that we, in the Constitution, forbid five-year-olds from running for president or third term presidents from running for office, so too does our Constitution forbid those who took an oath of office and later broke it. And in Minnesota we have challengers who are now asking the Secretary of State to abide by the Constitution and by Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment and to ensure that Trump is not on the ballot.

Free Speech For People, on behalf of a diverse group of Minnesota voters, recently filed a legal challenge under Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment before the Minnesota Supreme Court to Trump’s eligibility to appear on the state’s 2024 presidential primary and general election ballot.
