FSFP President John Bonifaz recently participated in a virtual discussion with the BOLD ReThink, a public advocacy project focused on democracy reform, about innovative legal strategies for getting money out of politics and preserving a democracy of, by, and for the people.

“The right to vote is a right to participate in the political process on an equal and meaningful basis and what we have today is a campaign finance system that undermines and violates the right to vote by excluding voters from a critical part of the machinery for getting elected,” said Bonifaz.

During the course of the discussion, Bonifaz discussed:

  • The Wealth Primary argument, which details how our current campaign finance system violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment.
  • A series of constitutional amendments to overturn Citizens United and prior rulings that allow corporations to be treated as people and money to be treated as speech.
  • The ongoing fight to challenge foreign-influenced corporate spending in our elections.
