Posted on June 25, 2021 Challenging Corruption Share: FSFP President John Bonifaz recently appeared on The Young Turks to discuss our call for Attorney General Garland to create an independent task force within the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate former President Trump, members of his administration, or his campaign, business, or other associates, for any potential federal criminal or civil violations they may have committed. “This is about upholding the rule of law and upholding the integrity of the Justice Department itself and that’s what is at stake here. And if there are no investigations, if we’re just going to go ahead and say we’re turning the page and never holding this president accountable, then what we’re really doing is saying that he is above the law, and we’re undermining the basic trust that people put in the Department of Justice,” said Bonifaz. The growing demand for accountability comes amidst a number of recent decisions by Attorney General Garland to defend Trump Justice Department positions. The more than two hundred thousand petitioners are demanding that the new Justice Department investigate former President Trump and his associates for their engagement in the insurrection on January 6, 2021; their efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election; offenses related to misuse of the presidency and high office for personal profit; and a list of other potential crimes. “Beyond the corruption concerns, there’s the actual concerns we saw on January 6th with the president inciting a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol – and those are federal offenses. Engaging in sedition, engaging in insurrection: those are federal crimes…The president must be held accountable to the law, not just to an investigation by the media or by Members of Congress,” said Bonifaz.
