Posted on March 10, 2020 (June 18, 2020) Democracy Amendments Share: Following decades of advocacy and determination, the Equal Rights Amendment, guaranteeing equal rights to all people regardless of sex, is moving forward. On January 15, Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the amendment, finally meeting the required number of states for ratification. But there is one more hurdle in this decades-long fight before the ERA is placed in the Constitution. When the ERA was initially introduced in 1972, Congress placed a seven-year restriction on the timeframe for ratifying the amendment – a deadline that is not required by the Constitution. Last month, the US House of Representatives voted to remove the arbitrary ratification deadline. Now, we must call on the US Senate to act. Stand for equality. Call your Senators today at 202-224-3121 or 202-224-3091 (TTY) and urge that they support S.J. Res. 6 to remove the artificial deadline for ratification of the ERA, ensuring that the ERA will finally be placed in the US Constitution. Free Speech For People is a proud supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment. Since our founding, we have pressed for the Democracy For All Amendment and the People’s Rights Amendment to reclaim our democracy and ensure every person can participate equally in our democracy. The ERA, which advances bedrock equality principles, is tied directly to our work to fulfill the promise of political equality for all. This Women’s History Month, let’s win this victory for the Equal Rights Amendment and the basic promise of equality for all. Call your Senators today at 202-224-3121 or 202-224-3091 (TTY) to urge them to support S.J. Res. 6. It is time — long past time — for the ERA.
