Major Jason Watson, an active-duty U.S. Air Force officer, appeared on CNN’s Erin Burnett OutFront this week to explain why he is calling on Congress to impeach and remove President Donald Trump despite the serious personal and professional consequences he may face.

“He has failed us,” Watson said. “He is flagrantly violating the Constitution, breaking the law, engaged in rampant corruption, and is killing Americans.”

Watson’s CNN appearance came weeks after he was arrested in a nonviolent act of civil disobedience on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. Holding a sign calling for Trump to be impeached, convicted, and removed, Watson urged every Member of Congress to follow the leadership of Representative Al Green and support articles of impeachment.

Major Watson has demonstrated the kind of courage our democracy demands. He has honored the same oath every member of Congress has taken—to support and defend the Constitution. His willingness to risk his own freedom and career stands in stark contrast to lawmakers who continue to look away as Trump commits unprecedented abuses of power.

The Framers included impeachment in the Constitution for moments precisely like this—when a president places himself above the law, abuses the power entrusted to him, and threatens the survival of our democratic institutions. Every day Congress fails to act gives Trump another opportunity to normalize lawlessness, consolidate power, silence opposition, and further weaken the institutions designed to restrain an authoritarian executive.

Trump is not a monarch. He is bound by the Constitution, and Congress is duty-bound to defend it.
