WORDS: The Night Before Citizens United

‘Twas the night before Citizens United and all thru the land,

Only few people knew that grim news was at hand.

The campaign finance laws had been written with care

In hopes that elections would be fair and square

The voters were nestled all snug in their beds;

Unaware that the rules would be turned on their heads;

The day of the ruling Free Speech For People arose,

To help fight the battle against this new corrupt low

The next day from the court there arose such a clatter,

That soon the whole nation knew what was the matter.

Word of the ruling hit the press with a flash,

Elections were opened to unlimited corporate cash!

It sent pain through the hearts of our patriots who saw

The end of a century of sensible law.

And worse when they realized the depths of our plights

The Court had enshrined corporate constitutional rights!

But Free Speech For People rose up to protect

Our Republic, and Citizens United to reject.

Let’s pass an amendment to restore to our nation

Democracy, Equality, and sound regulation.

Now thanks to our friends we’re a third of the way

To a 28th amendment that can still save the day

We need your help because it’s no mystery

We need all hands on deck if we want to make history!

So spring to our aid with a year-end donation

And as you lift up your glass, join our recitation
