Posted on June 6, 2019 (June 18, 2020) Democracy Amendments Share: Today, the New Hampshire Senate voted to pass HB 504, a bill calling for an amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United, which allowed unlimited money from wealthy and corporate donors to flood elections. The state Senate vote follows the March 19 approval of HB 504 by the state House of Representatives. With the newly passed bill in New Hampshire, twenty states are now on record in support of a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. Thank you to the dedicated citizens across New Hampshire and the leadership of New Hampshire’s elected officials for moving our country one important step closer to getting big money out of politics. Thank you, also, to American Promise, Take Back Our Republic, Open Democracy, Fix It America, Public Citizen, People for the American Way, and more local and national organizations working in support of this bill. Free Speech For People is thrilled to celebrate this victory with our allies! With New Hampshire joining the national movement to support overturning Citizens United, limiting corporate influence on federal lawmakers is within arm’s reach. The vote should signal to the U.S. Senate that it should vote on the For the People Act (H.R. 1), which contains a host of democracy reforms, including a call for overturning Citizens United.
