The lion’s share of our national wealth and income is increasingly concentrated in the hands of 1 percent of the population while the ranks of the poor continue to grow – almost 25 percent of our children live in poverty – and the middle class sees less opportunity in its future than at any time since the Great Depression.

The Citizens United decision by the U.S. Supreme Court crippled American democracy. By equating money to speech our Supreme Court shifted the power of our great political system away from the people it was created to serve. The ability to give political contributions became greater than the ability to stay informed and vote. Our guest today, John Bonifaz, director and co-founder of Free Speech For People, believes that this decision is wrong and has to be undone.

America is at a crossroads. Shall we be governed by people or by corporations?
If you thought we had already answered that question more than two centuries ago, you’re right. The framers of our Constitution were clear that we were to be a government of, for and by the people. They recognized that corporations were not people and that the Constitution did not guarantee corporations rights intended for people.

Passage of a constitutional amendment involves a trip down a long and pothole-strewn road, but if the outcome would mean the overturning of a cynical U.S. Supreme Court decision enabling corporations to corrupt election campaigns with a flood of cash the trip is worth it. The sooner it begins the better.
