WASHINGTON, D.C. – Major Jason Watson, an active US Air Force officer, was arrested today in a nonviolent act of civil disobedience by standing on the steps of the US Capitol holding a sign calling for Donald Trump to be impeached, removed, and convicted for the high crimes he has committed since assuming power again.

At a press conference organized by the Removal Coalition, Major Watson was joined by Removal Coalition founder Jessica Denson, Congressman Al Green, members of About Face Veterans, constitutional scholar Bruce Fein, Defenders of Our Republic, and other advocates calling for constitutional accountability.

Before his arrest, Major Watson called on every Member of Congress to follow the leadership of Representative Al Green by supporting articles of impeachment against President Trump. He also urged Americans to engage in peaceful, nonviolent protest until Congress fulfills its constitutional duty. Watch Major Watson’s remarks and arrest here.

“Major Watson demonstrated today the kind of courage our democracy demands,” said John Bonifaz, President and Co-Founder of Free Speech For People. “He honored the same oath that every Member of Congress has taken—to support and defend the Constitution. His willingness to risk his own freedom stands in stark contrast to those who continue to look away as President Trump commits unprecedented abuses of power. Congress has both the authority and the constitutional obligation to act to impeach and remove Donald Trump from public office.”

Free Speech For People launched its impeachment campaign on Inauguration Day and has since gathered more than 1.1 million petition signatures calling on Congress to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Trump. The organization proudly joins Major Watson in calling on Members of Congress to fulfill their sworn duty to protect and defend our Constitution at this critical moment in our history by invoking the congressional power of impeachment.

Free Speech For People has documented hundreds of impeachable offenses across 27 separate grounds, including:

  • Engaging in corruption for his own and his close associates’ personal enrichment
  • Committing or Planning War and Humanitarian Crimes
  • Unconstitutionally usurping Congress’s power to declare war
  • Committing treason by levying war against the United States, individual states, and their people
  • Calling for the execution of Members of Congress
  • Abusing the power of his office to unlawfully maintain political power
  • Illegally kidnapping, imprisoning, and removing U.S. residents
  • Unconstitutionally and systemically violating the First Amendment
  • Defying court orders, threatening judges, and unconstitutionally usurping judicial authority
  • Abusing investigatory and prosecutorial powers

“This is an existential moment for our nation and our democracy. We either have a Constitution, or we don’t,” Bonifaz added. “Donald Trump has already engaged in multiple abuses of power. We demand that our elected officials in Congress carry out the mandate of their oath to protect the Constitution at this critical time by standing up and bringing impeachment proceedings against this lawless president.”
