Free Speech For People recently joined a coalition of more than fifty national organizations in a letter urging Members of Congress to support the Freedom to Vote Act, a piece of legislation which includes, “critical measures to safeguard elections, prevent voter intimidation, protect local election officials from partisan attacks, and protect election works and election infrastructure against threats or violence.”

“We saw in 2020 how a few principled actors, relying on longstanding rules and norms, prevented a political coup. Now that some of those vital elements have been removed, it is not hard to imagine a successful subversion of future elections. Fortunately, there are steps we can take to prevent this assault on democracy,” the letter states.

The letter comes after months of unprecedented and coordinated efforts to cast doubt on the U.S. election system following former president Trump’s election loss to President Joe Biden last year. The Big Lie, as it is now commonly referred to, rests on reckless and false conspiracy theories and unproven claims of election fraud that are still in circulation today. In a separate campaign, FSFP has been calling for Congress to pass the Digital Accountability Act in order to hold social media companies accountable for amplifying on their platforms disinformation, violence, and other lies that threaten our democracy.

“We call on all members of Congress to condemn attacks on our democratic principles and practices, and to affirmatively defend the integrity of federal elections by cosponsoring and enacting the Freedom to Vote Act,” the letter states.
