FSFP Legal Director Ron Fein appeared on CNN to discuss our recent challenge to Rep. Madison Cawthorn’s 2022 candidacy based on the Fourteenth Amendment’s Insurrectionist Disqualification Clause, which bars insurrectionists from future office.

“The definition of engaging in an insurrection is more than just the people who stormed the Capitol building and attacked the police and tried to physically disrupt the vote. Engaging in an insurrection can include broader participation…The information indicates that [Cawthorn] was involved in helping to plan the events of January 6th and knew that violence was substantially likely to result,” said Fein.

Free Speech For People is representing a group of North Carolina voters in their legal challenge against Rep. Cawthorn based on reasonable suspicion that he helped facilitate the January 6, 2021 insurrection. The organization has teamed up with Our Revolution to co-lead a national campaign to ensure that election officials across the country follow the mandate of Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment.

“We are definitely planning to file a series of these challenges…Rep. Cawthorn is the first, but he will not be the last,” said Fein.
