Posted on April 2, 2014 (June 17, 2022) Democracy Amendments Share: STATEMENT BY JOHN BONIFAZ, CO-FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT OF FREE SPEECH FOR PEOPLE, ON TODAY’S US SUPREME COURT RULING IN MCCUTCHEON V. FEC Today, the US Supreme Court has threatened our democracy again. In McCutcheon v. FEC, a sharply-divided Court has struck down longstanding aggregate contribution limits, allowing even more money from wealthy individuals into our political process. This 5-4 ruling will exacerbate further the problem of big money forces dominating our elections and drowning out the voices of ordinary citizens. In the face of this threat, the people are rising. Thousands of citizens across the country will gather today in more than 140 demonstrations in 38 states to protest this ruling and to demand our democracy back. Today’s Supreme Court ruling will only further fuel the fast-growing movement in this country for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Court and reclaim our democracy. We have done this before in our nation’s history. Twenty-seven times before. Seven of those times to overturn egregious Supreme Court rulings.
